For a long time now, I’ve thought that the single best way for men to fight the radical inequalities of the family law/judicial practice system is to control our fertility. To me, the core of the matter is that, in a country in which 40% of births occur out of wedlock, women have no obligation any time, any place to simply inform the man that he is the father of a child. That, plus the fact that a single father’s rights depend entirely on his actually parenting his child, mean that his rights reside not in his hands but in those of the child’s mother. If she wants him to take part in the child’s life, then he can, by law, establish parental rights. If she doesn’t, he is out of luck…
